Asheville --  An automobile accident that claimed a life in east Asheville on Sunday morning is being investigated by the Asheville Police Department.

At approximately 7:36 a.m. on July 6, officers responded to an injury-inflicted motor vehicle collision on Interstate 40 East close to Mile Marker 51.

According to the preliminary inquiry, Carlos Alfredo Amaya-Segovia (09/02/1990) was operating a 2008 Ford F-250 truck when it mechanically failed while carrying a trailer. He was forced to halt and pull over on the right shoulder of the freeway.

A 2021 Ford F-450 truck that was heading east and pulling a trailer also tried to change lanes and struck the disabled F-250 truck.  When the F-250 collided, Amaya-Segovia was outside his car when it struck him.  Amaya-Segovia's injuries caused him to pass away on the spot; his next of kin has been informed.

This collision is still under investigation.  Following the conclusion of the inquiry, the Buncombe County District Attorney's Office will confer with the Asheville Police Department.
