North Carolina --  July 28, 2025: Roy Cooper, the two-term former Governor of North Carolina, officially announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate in the 2026 election cycle today.

The announcement was made via a video released across social media platforms and his campaign website.

Cooper, a Democrat, served as North Carolina's governor from 2017 to 2025, reaching his term limit. Prior to his governorship, he held the position of North Carolina Attorney General for 16 years, and also served in the North Carolina General Assembly.

His decision to run follows the late June announcement by current Republican Senator Thom Tillis that he would not seek re-election in 2026, creating an open seat. This development has positioned the North Carolina Senate race as a potentially highly competitive contest.

In his announcement, Cooper emphasized themes of supporting the middle class, stating that "these are not ordinary times." He highlighted his record as governor, including efforts to expand Medicaid and balance the state budget, and his previous work as Attorney General.

The entrance of Cooper into the race is viewed by Democrats as a significant development, as they aim to flip the seat, which has been held by Republicans since 2015. North Carolina is considered a key battleground state in federal elections.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley is widely expected to enter the race on the Republican side, potentially setting up a prominent general election matchup. Another Democrat, former U.S. Rep. Wiley Nickel, had previously announced his candidacy but is now anticipated to suspend his campaign and endorse Cooper.

The 2026 North Carolina U.S. Senate race is projected to be one of the most closely watched and expensive electoral contests in the nation.
