Asheville --  The Asheville Police Department is investigating a vehicle accident that happened in West Asheville on Saturday afternoon.

At about 2:52 p.m. on June 7th, APD Patrol Officers responded to a multi-vehicle collision near Exit 1B on Interstate 240 West.

According to the preliminary investigation, Zachariah Robert Cosgrove (05/29/1984) was operating a 2015 Jeep Wrangler westbound on I-240. The Jeep struck a 1984 Pontiac Firebird while changing lanes, rolling over and then slamming into a 2018 Ford F-150 heading in the same direction.  The incident also caused the F-150 to overturn.

Cosgrove was thrown from the car when it rolled because he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.  He was taken to Mission Hospital after suffering severe injuries, where he eventually passed away.  Next of kin has been notified.

The investigation into the collision is continuing. If anyone has information regarding this incident, please contact APD at (828) 252-1110. You can also send an anonymous tip by texting TIP2APD to 847411 or by using the TIP2APD smartphone application (search “Asheville PD” in your app store).
