McDowell County -- July 30, 2025: In a significant move for conservation and outdoor recreation in Western North Carolina, the Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina (FCNC) today announced the acquisition of a vital 22-acre parcel in southern McDowell County.

This strategic purchase not only safeguards critical natural habitat but also marks a crucial step forward in the development of the ambitious Wilderness Gateway State Trail.

The newly protected property, dubbed the "Vein Mountain Connector," holds immense ecological value. It encompasses a vital segment of Bakers Creek, a key subwatershed of the Second Broad River, contributing to regional water quality. Furthermore, the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program has identified the land as potential habitat for several uncommon species facing threats from habitat loss, including the four-toed salamander, bog turtle, and mole salamander. The FCNC's acquisition ensures the long-term protection of these vulnerable populations.

The Vein Mountain Connector's significance extends beyond its immediate ecological benefits. It strategically links the existing Box Creek Wilderness and Bobs Creek State Natural Area, reinforcing a growing network of more than 65,000 acres of conserved land within the expansive South Mountains region. This interconnectedness is vital for wildlife movement and ecosystem resilience.

Notably for outdoor enthusiasts, the newly acquired land will host a segment of a planned 10-mile trail loop, which will serve as a foundational piece of the much larger 170-mile Wilderness Gateway State Trail. Designated by the North Carolina State Parks Department, the Wilderness Gateway State Trail is a huge undertaking championed by the FCNC and numerous partners. When completed, this multi-county route will create a recreational corridor designed for hiking, biking, and adaptive recreation, stretching through Catawba, Burke, McDowell, and Rutherford counties, and eventually connecting vast conservation lands between Chimney Rock and Hickory.

The FCNC and its partners believe that trails like the Wilderness Gateway State Trail are more than just pathways; they are economic engines for rural communities. By attracting ecotourism, these trails bring visitors who support local businesses, create jobs, and diversify regional economies. This land acquisition underscores the FCNC's commitment to leveraging conservation as a driver for sustainable growth and improved quality of life across Western North Carolina.

The development of the Wilderness Gateway State Trail is a long-term collaborative effort, requiring ongoing land acquisition, rigorous planning, and consistent funding. However, with strategic acquisitions like the Vein Mountain Connector, the vision of a truly interconnected and protected Western North Carolina is steadily becoming a reality, promising both ecological resilience and a vibrant future for the region's communities.
